I wrote this solo for Indiana University’s Hammer and Nail project in collaboration with percussionist Chris Trlak. I had been meaning to compose a multipercussion work for some time when this opportunity arrived, so I jumped at it. I began thinking about situations or moods that drums can reasonably convey. Images of a majestic hunting cat came to mind.

The piece moves through scenarios of a hunt: Rest, Stalk, and Chase. Each section feels different, and the complexity gradually grows. Sprinkled throughout are references to a “call” between “roads” in the traditional batá music of the Yoruba and Lukumi peoples. The roads are different musical patterns, and the calls are transitions between them. The call used here comes from drumming patterns for their deity, Ochosi, the hunter.
